Thanks to grants from the Napa County Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment, Friends of the Napa River (FONR) partnered with the Napa County Resource Conservation District (RCD) to initiate the Napa Youth Stewardship Council (NYSC) over the 2015-16 school year. This after school service learning group connects students from different schools and provides them with information on local environmental issues, opportunities to learn about careers in the environmental sciences from local professionals, and hands-on experience planning and leading environmentally themed community service projects. The inaugural class was made up of 13 amazing students from local high schools: American Canyon, New Tech, Vintage and Napa High. The NYSC worked with community members to plant oak trees in Napa and American Canyon, hosted a community service day at the RCD demonstration vineyard, shared information environmentally friendly practices at the Napa Earth Day celebration, attended a wildlife lecture and helped clean up trash along the river.
